Information Philosophy, as it is described at this website, is the result of twenty years of
travelling, personal observation and research.
The term Information Philosophy was chosen more than a decade ago to define the outcome: the field of philosophical aspects of human information processing.
Meanwhile others have started to use the same term for non-related areas; links to the different
uses of the term Information Philosophy can therefore be found at the download and linking page of this website.
Information Philosophy at this website contrasts with Information Science; whereas Information
Science places information processing in a technical or system interaction perspective does Information Philosophy focus on
human, philosophical, aspects of information processing.
Information Philosophy hereby discriminates between three methods of human information processing,
which it uses as its research basis. According to this approach people possess three tools or dimensions to process information.
The first tool is argumentation; the rational dimension of information processing. The second
tool is association; the emotional dimension of information processing. The third and final tool is contemplation or
meditation; the spiritual dimension of information processing.
The three tools together cover the extremely vast spectrum of Psychological, Sociological, Anthropological,
Theological and Political aspects of human information processing and communication.
Information Philosophy dominantly focuses on macro factors; it builds communication models or
maps, which create an overview of processing aspects or processing philosophies.
Up till now the main area of research is Intercultural Communication. Information Philosophy
maps cultural differences and explains from an information processing point of view how cultural communication differs, can
be understood and bridged.
Other research areas are business, marketing and organizational communication. Analogous to the
cultural information processing maps, specific, topical maps have been created for these areas.
The spectrum of Information Philosophy applications is almost unlimited, the human mind and
its extensive range of processing philosophies are the horizon.
